Abstract Details

Purpose:

The aim of this study was the evaluation of visual quality for far, intermediate and near distances, subjective refraction, contrast sensitivity and defocus performance with a new seqmental, refractive EDOF IOL.

Setting:

All implantations and follow-ups were performed at the Breyer-Kaymak-Klabe Eyesurgery in Duesseldorf, Germany, which is part of the International Vision Correcton Research Center Network (IVCRC.net).

Methods:

40 eyes of 20 patients with cataract and expected postoperative corneal astigmatism of under -0.75 D were included. In all eyes, a new hydrophobic EDOF-IOL with 1.5 D addition (Acunex Vario, AN6V; Teleon Surgical B.V., Netherlands) was implanted. We assessed subjective refraction, monocular and binocular uncorrected and best distance corrected visual acuity for far, intermediate and near distances, contrast sensitivity and binocular defocus capacity after 3 months postoperatively. Halo and Glare phenomena are documented.

Results:

UCDVA improved from 0.46 ±0.29 logMAR after 3 months postoperatively to 0.04 ±0.09 logMAR. Distance corrected visual acuity (DCVA) was -0.01 ±0.09 logMAR. UIVA was 0.11 ±0.10 logMAR and DCIVA 0.07 ±0.11 logMAR. UNVA was 0.32 ±0.12 logMAR and DCNVA 0.27 ±0.20 logMAR. The cumulative spherical equivalent of subjective refraction was within +/-0.5 D for 81% and within +/-1.0 D for 100% of all included eyes. Contrast values showed excellent values under photopic and mesopic conditions. Binocular defocus curve revealed a continuously flat course with VA ≤0.3 logMAR from +1.0 D to −2.5 D.

Conclusions:

This new hydrophobic segmental extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL provide excellent visual outcomes across a wide range of distances from far to intermediate up to 60 cm, with contrast sensitivity and photopic phenomena values comparable with monofocal IOL.
