Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the 3-month postoperative quality of vision (QoV) and visual performance between a combination implantation of extended depth of focus (EDoF) with trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) and bilateral implantation of trifocal IOLs.

Setting:

Cathedral Eye Clinic, Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK

Methods:

Refractive lens exchange patients were divided into two groups. Group A consisted of patients implanted with an EDoF IOL (Zeiss, AT LARA) in the dominant eye combined with a trifocal IOL (Zeiss, AT LISA) in the non-dominant. Group B received bilateral trifocal IOL implantation. Refraction, uncorrected (UDVA) and best-corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuities, uncorrected intermediate (UIVA) and near (UNVA) visual acuities, and a quality of vision (QoV) questionnaire were evaluated 3 months postoperatively.

Results:

Each group comprised of 30 patients. The mean binocular UDVA was -0.07 ± 0.06 logMAR in Group A and -0.05 ± 0.07 logMAR in group B (P=0.263). The mean binocular UIVA was 0.15 ± 0.15 logMAR and 0.15 ± 0.10 logMAR in the respective groups (P=0.924). The mean binocular UNVA was 0.17 ± 11 logMAR and 0.16 ± 0.10 logMAR (P=0.636). Group A achieved a mean day QoV score of 8.9 ± 1.09 and group B had a score of 8.9 ± 1.18. The nighttime QoV scores were 8.23 ± 1.38 and 7.53 ± 1.38 in the respective groups.

Conclusions:

Combination implantation of either multifocal IOL design restored distance, intermediate and near visual function. However, the extended depth of focus IOL and trifocal IOL combination appeared to provide a better overall nighttime QoV score.
