Purpose:

To analyse the efficacy of Impression Cytology (IC) for diagnosing Ocular surface squamous neoplasia (OSSN) along with its correlation to gold standard biopsy

Setting:

M M Joshi Eye Hospital , Hubli , India

Methods:

Eyes with clinically evident OSSN or suspicious lesions underwent IC and tissue biopsy at a tertiary level eye hospital in South India, from July 2016 to April 2018. OSSN was grouped as carcinoma in situ (CIS) and invasive squamous cell carcinoma (ISCC). The results of IC were compared with biopsy.

Results:

57 eyes of 51 patients with an age range of 18-85 years (mean 41 years) were involved in the study. 44 eyes had clinically typical lesions suggestive of OSSN and 13 eyes had suspicious lesions like atypical pterygia or pingueculae. IC showed CIS in 36.84% (versus 38.59% with biopsy), ISCC in 31.57% (23.7% with biopsy) and was negative in 28.07% versus 22.8% with biopsy.

Conclusions:

Impression cytology is good screening tool for OSSN and also helps in differentiating it from suspicious lesions.
