Abstract Details

Purpose:

To investigate immediate and short-term visual recovery in large cohort of 1271 myopic eyes (with or without astigmatism) treated with SmartSurfACE procedure, Transepithelial Photorefractive Keratectomy (TE-PRK) and using the Smart Pulse Technology (SPT, SCHWIND eye-tech solutions GmbH, Kleinostheim, Germany).

Setting:

Laser Eye Centre

Methods:

Retrospective case series. Post-operative outcomes evaluated immediately after the surgery (Day 0), at day 1 and 3 months postoperatively, after myopic SmartSurfACE treatment. Pre-operative spherical equivalent -4.78±2.60D, range -16.38D to -0.50D. At each visit pre-operative corrected and uncorrected distance visual acuity (CDVA, UDVA), postoperative UDVA, monocularly and binocularly, immediately after the surgery, day 1 and 3 months follow up were analyzed in 3 groups: moderate myopia (0D to -6D), high myopia (-6.12D to -10D) and extreme myopia (> -10D). Patients were asked if they could read their phones and asked to send text messages immediately after surgery.

Results:

Immediately after surgery, 82.5% eyes achieved monocular UDVA 20/40 or better while 95.1% patients achieved binocular UDVA 20/40 or better. At 3 months, 97.1% achieved monocular UDVA 20/40 or better and 91.2% achieved 20/25 or better. Mean spherical equivalent were +0.16±0.38D (N=909) in moderate myopia, +0.11±0.46D (N=315) in high myopia, and +0.06±0.55D (N=47) in extreme myopia group. Mean LogMar of UDVA were 0.014±0.065 in moderate myopia, 0.050±0.093 in high myopia, and 0.109±0.141 in extreme myopia. 97% of patients could read and send text messages with their phones.

Conclusions:

Immediate recovery after SmartSurfACE PRK in our large cohort was rapid, providing functional binocular UDVA immediately after surgery. Almost all patients were able to read their phones. The new ablation profile of the SmartPulse beam results in a smoother ablation and may provide more rapid recovery.
