The effect of 0℃ BSS on haze in TransPRK surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the influence of 0℃ BSS on haze after using it to rinse the corneal stromal bed in the Trans PRK surgery.

Setting:

This was a prospective case-control study

Methods:

110 eyes of 55 medium myopic patients undergoing Trans PRK surgery were divided into two groups randomly. Group A used 0℃ BSS to rinse the corneal stromal bed after excimer laser ablation, while group B only used room temperature (21-23℃) BSS. 44 eyes of 22 subjects were recruited into group A and 46 eyes of 23 subjects were recruited into group B. During 6 months of follow-up, the visual acuity, diopter, intraocular pressure and haze were observed at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months after surgery.

Results:

At one week postoperatively, no eyes of level 0 haze were found in both groups(P=0.25). At one month postoperatively, 2 eyes in level 0.5 in group A, 3 eyes in level 0.5,in group B(P=0.18). 4 eyes in level 0.5 in group A, 5 eyes in level 0.5, 1 eye in level 1, 2 eyes in level 2 in group B at 3 months postoperatively (P=0.038). 2 eyes in level 0.5 in group A. 3 eyes in level 0.5, 2 eyes in level 1, 1 eye in level 2 in group B at 6 months postoperatively (P=0.016).

Conclusions:

The apply of 0°C BSS rinsing in Trans PRK surgery has a certain inhibitory effect on haze postoperatively, which can reduce the amount of hormones and make the operation safer.
