Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess phenotype and severity of keratoconus (KC) at diagnosis in children compared to adults

Setting:

Retrospective, tertiary eye hospital

Methods:

Charts of 999 patients were reviewed, comprising 162 patients aged ≤15 (group 1), 759 patients aged 16-30 (group 2) and 78 aged >30 (group 3) years. Phenotype & severity was assessed in group 1 and 3 using Amsler- Krumeich’s classification, positive corneal scarring (CS) and best distance corrected visual acuity (BDCVA).

Results:

A male predominance was observed in both groups. Ocular & systemic atopy were present more in group 1 (45.9% vs 20.8%). Children were significantly more likely to have stage 4 (32% vs 8%) and CS (47.5% vs18.2%) in comarsion to adults. BDCVA of ≥20/40 were more present in adults (90.3% vs 76.6%) (p<0.002). Corneal transplantation was performed in 30.5% and 18.9% in children and adults, respectively.

Conclusions:

A clear inverse correlation exists between age and the severity of KC. A close monitoring is necessarily in order to control allergy and prevent progression.
