Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the superficial profile and morphology of different new generation intraocular lenses (IOLs).

Setting:

Department of Medicine, Surgery and Health Sciences, University of Trieste, Trieste, Italy

Methods:

Different extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs and one new generation monofocal IOL with higher-order asphericity were studied. Contact profilometry was used to measure the superficial profile of the IOLs. Profiles were compared with those of conventional spherical and aspheric IOLs. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images were obtained to evaluate the superficial morphology of all lenses.

Results:

Some EDOF IOLs presented a superficial design based on concentric diffractive rings of limited height. Another EDOF IOL and the new higher-order aspheric monofocal IOL showed minimal and progressive central steepening of the profile with respect to the conventional monofocal IOL of the same brand. The difference was not detectable at SEM imaging and was in the range of few microns at the profilometry analysis.

Conclusions:

This study describes the profile of new and innovative IOLs. The improvement in intermediate vision can be achieved through different optical designs. The new higher-order aspheric IOL present a peculiar and innovative profile, which appear similar to conventional aspheric IOLs with just minimal differences in the central design.
