Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the visual and refractive results, safety and efficacy indexes of bilateral implantation of the Santen Xact® (IMEX, Spain) monofocal Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) intraocular lens after cataract phacoemulsification.

Setting:

Ophthalmology Department, Hospital de Braga, Braga, Portugal

Methods:

Non-randomized clinical trial, which included 20 eyes of 10 patients submitted to bilateral cataract phacoemulsification with Xact® monofocal IOL implantation. Patients included were required to be aged above 50 years old and to have a normal topography and keratometric astigmatism below 1,50D. 1 and 3 months after the surgery uncorrected and best corrected was measured for distance (UDVA, BCVA), intermediate (UIVA, DCIVA) and near (UNVA, DCNVA). Manifest refraction, spectacle independence, photic phenomena (distribution of halo, starburst, and glare), binocular defocus curve and contrast sensitivity at scotopic luminance levels were also obtained. The primary endpoint was the binocular uncorrected visual acuity.

Results:

Total of 20 eyes from 10 patients was included and followed for 3 months; mean age was 60,50±12,02,54 years. Mean UDVA and BCVA preop improved from 0,25±0,13 to 0,79±0,22 and from 0,55±0,15 to 1,00±0,19 (decimal, p<0.001), respectively. DCIVA and DCNVA was 0,80±0,16 and 0,48±0,08, respectively. All but one patient indicated that they needed spectacles for near activities. None of the patients reported photic phenomena. Scotopic contrast sensitivity values were within the normal range. The binocular defocus curve showed a peak at 0D, and then a constant decline until -3.0D.

Conclusions:

Bilateral implantation of Santen Xact® monofocal EDOF IOL after cataract surgery offered excellent distance and intermediate VA, as well as good near visual performances, while maintaining excellent contrast sensitivity and no photic symptoms. Therefore, the Santen Xact® monofocal EDOF is a novel, effective, reliable and extremely safe surgical solution for the correction of presbyopia in patients submitted to cataract surgery.
