Abstract Details

Purpose:

Enhanced depth of focus (EDOF) lenses have an extended far focus area which reaches to the intermediate distance, providing high-quality vision over a continuous range of focus. An option to improve the contrast in the intermediate distance is a mix-and-match-system, in which additions of multifocal IOLs between both eyes differ by combining +2.5D with +3D addition. To preserve binocular balance it would be necessary to provide an IOL with a continuum of good visual acuity from distance to near.

Vienna Institute for Research in Ocular Surgery (VIROS), Department of Ophthalmology, Hanusch Hospital, Vienna, Austria

Methods:

This randomised controlled trial compares a new EDOF IOL (ARTIS ACTIVE, Cristalens, France), which is designed as a twinset of IOLs (ARTIS ACTIVE MID and PLUS), with a standard EDOF lens (AT Lara IOL, Zeiss, Germany). Patients are allocated 1:1 into the study group (Cristalens ARTIS ACTIVE) and the control group (Zeiss AT Lara). Exclusion criteria include pupil abnormalities, ophthalmic diseases which can compromise the measurement or incompatibility with multifocality. Follow ups will be performed 1 week after each cataract surgery as well as 1–2 months and 6 months after the second surgery.

Results:

56 eyes of 28 patients, who are scheduled for cataract surgery are included in this study. The recruitment is still ongoing, therefore results are outstanding. Primary objective is to demonstrate the superiority of the ARTIS ACTIVE in binocular visual acuity at 40 cm to a standard EDOF IOL (AT Lara). Secondary objective is to compare binocular contrast sensitivity (with and without glare), binocular defocus curves with distance correction, monocular and binocular halos, and reading speed between the two IOLs.

Conclusions:

The ARTIS ACTIVE provides a new EDOF IOL twinset system using binocularity to preserve a continuous range of focus. Results and conclusion of this study will be presented at the ESCRS Congress 2019 in Paris.
