Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the clinical outcomes, quality of vision and degree of spectacle independance following bilateral implantation of a new Extended Depth of Focus (EDoF) Intraocular Lens.

Setting:

Nethradhama Superspeciality Eye Hospital, Bengaluru, India

Methods:

It is a prospective interventional study which includes 60 eyes of 30 patients undergoing cataract surgery and willing for bilateral implantation with Extended Depth of Focus lens (ZEISS AT LARA 829MP IOL) after phacoemulsification, with second eye surgery within one week of first eye. Patients were tested for corrected/ uncorrected distant, intermediate & near visual acuity, reading performance (using Salzburg Reading Desk), defocus curve & contrast sensitivity tested at 1 week, 1 month & 3 month post-operatively.

Results:

At post op 3 months, patients showed excellent results and spectacle independence with binocular mean UCVA being 0.07±0.09logMAR, mean intermediate and near vision were 0.0125±0.08 logMAR and 0.15 ± 0.11 logMAR respectively. None of the patients required glasses or contact lenses for fine tuning of distance/near vision. Defocus curve showed a VA of 0.2 logMAR or better in the defocus range of -3D to +2D. Reading speeds and contrast sensitivity improved at each follow up. Few patients reported moderate to minimal dysphotopsia which resolved by 3 months. None of the eyes had PCO at the end of 3 months.

Conclusions:

At 3 months, all patients had satisfactory outcomes in terms of unaided visual acuity for distance, intermediate and near, with good contrast sensitivity and minimal dysphotopsia. Overall, patient satisfaction was excellent, especially in terms of spectacle independence.
