Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the visual outcomes, contrast sensitivity, and patient satisfaction between bilateral implantation of a diffractive trifocal intraocular lens (IOL), and blended implantation of an extended depth of focus (EDOF) lens in dominant eye and diffractive trifocal IOL in the nondominant eye

Setting:

Biruni University Faculty of Medicine, Ophthalmology Department, Istanbul, Turkey

Methods:

This study assessed 40 patients (80 eyes) who had bilateral cataract surgery performed using the bilateral implantation of diffractive trifocal IOL, AT LISAtri 839MP (group 1) and blended implantation of an EDOF lens, AT LARA 829MP in dominant eye and diffractive trifocal IOL, AT LISA tri 839MP in the nondominant eye (group 2). Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) at 4 m, uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA) at 80 cm and uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) at 40 cm; contrast sensitivity (CS), defocus curve, and responses to a patient questionnaire were evaluated.

Results:

There was no statistically significant difference between groups regarding UDVA and UNVA (p>0.05). Group 2 showed better intermediate visual outcomes than group 1 (p<0.05). Group 2 provided significantly better photopic and mesopic CS outcomes than group 1 (p<0.05). Defocus curves were similar between groups from +0.00 D to -2.00 D, but showed significant difference from -2.00 D to -4.00 D.

Conclusions:

Both groups provided effective visual performance. Group 2 exhibited better CS under photopic and mesopic conditions. The combination of EDOF and trifocal IOL seems to be a good option with comfortable vision at all distances and less adverse visual phenomena.
