Purpose:

To provide early postoperative clinical and patient reported outcomes with bilateral implantation of an extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOL (AT LARA 829MP, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG) in a large consecutive series of patients

Setting:

Private practice

Methods:

The outcomes of 522 eyes of 261 consecutive patients recently underwent a refractive lens exchange with bilateral implantation of AT LARA 829MP IOL were analyzed. The mean age was 58.2 ± 7.0 years; 55.2% were male and 44.8% were female. Inclusion criteria were primary procedure with no previous refractive surgery, emmetropic aim in each eye, preop corneal astigmatism 1.50 D or less and absence of any ocular pathology. Postop, CDVA, UDVA, uncorrected reading vision, patient reported outcomes and adverse events were assessed at 1 and 3 months.

Results:

Mean IOL power was 21.78 ± 3.17 D. At 3 months, 88.7% and 98.8% of eyes were within 0.50 and 1.00 D of emmetropia, respectively; 91.9% achieved monocular UDVA of 20/25 or better. The mean postop monocular uncorrected reading vision was 0.32 ± 0.16 logMAR. Patients maintained good CDVA with the mean of -0.05 ± 0.06. 94.6% of patients reported that their postop vision met or exceeded their expectations and were satisfied with the outcome. Similarly, 94.6% and 87.5% no longer required optical correction for distant and near activities, respectively.

Conclusions:

The EDOF IOL achieved good refractive predictability and visual outcomes with high patient satisfaction spectacle independence.
