Purpose:

Bibliographic review and description of peripheral ulcerative keratitis (PUK) cases diagnosed in Fundación Jiménez Díaz hospital between 2016 and 2018. Associated diseases, medical or surgical treatment, complications and evolution will be considered.

Setting:

Tertiary referral hospital Fundación Jiménez Díaz Madrid.

Methods:

Retrospective, descriptive, observational study of patients diagnosed with idiopathic or autoimmune-related PUK between 2016 and 2018 in our hospital.

Results:

11 patients were diagnosed with PUK; In 8 there was an autoimmune disease associated, the other 3 were idiopathic. Rheumatoid arthritis was the most frequently associated disease. Only two patients were well controlled with topical treatment, whereas the rest received intensive sistemic therapy, including corticosteroid boluses (45,5 % ) and ciclofosfamide (18 %). In three patients it was necessary to make changes in the maintenance treatment. Surgical treatment with amniotic membrane transplantation was required in 4 patients and a superficial lamellar queratoplastia in one. Median follow-up was 20 months. All patients keep a good visual acuity.

Conclusions:

PUK is a potentially dangerous disease that implies an intensive treatment and a multidisciplinary close follow-up. When PUK is diagnosed, an autoimmune disease screening should be ruled out. The sooner we diagnose and treat, the better evolution both visual and systemic.
