Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine whether surgically induced against the rule astigmatism (ATR) produce some amount of pseudo- accommodation.

Setting:

Setting:

The study was done at a rural eastern Indian eye hospital named Vivekananda Mission Asram Netra Niramay Niketan , Chaitanyapur, Haldia, West Bengal, India.

Methods:

We measured the post operative unaided near vision at 1month follow up in following 3 groups- Group 1- post op refraction Plano, Group 2-post op ATR ranging from -0.25 to -0.75D at 80- 110 degree, Group 3- post op ATR ranging from -1.0 to -1.25D at 80-110 degree.

Results:

Total patients 151, Male: female- 0.73, Mean age- 59.27. In group 1, 43 patients were included among them 27.9% can read N8, 32.5% can read N10. In group 2, among 55 patients 38.1% can read N8, 36.3% can read N10. In group 3, among 53 patients 56.6% can read N8, 26.4 % can read N10.

Conclusions:

In our study we found surgically induced against the rule astigmatism in the range of -1.0 to -1.25D produce pseudo-accommodation which will help the patients for better uncorrected near vision without compromising distance vision much.
