Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the visual acuity and refraction outcomes of multifocal intraocular lens(MIOL) implantation in patientswith previous corneal laser refractive surgery for hyperopia, myopia and presbyopia. To describe complications and management.

Setting:

One single center Sinan Goker Eye clinic retrospective study

Methods:

This single-center retrospective study analyzed the eyes implanted multifocal intraocular lens after refractive laser surgery .Outcomes were pre and postoperatively corrected (CDVA), uncorrected distance(UDVA), corrected and uncorrected near visual acuity (CNVA/ UNVA), refraction outcomes, enhancement and posterior capsule opacification rates. Also compared previously hyperopic and myopic eyes results.

Results:

91 eyes of 52 patientsincluded. Mean age was 58,1± 5 yearsfollowed mean 8 months. 39 eyes had myopic, 45 eyes hyperopic and 7 eyes of 5 patients had Supracor previously. The mean postoperative UDVA was 0.8± 0.2, CDVA was 0.95± 0.1 Snellen decimal. Near vision improved from 0.25± 0.2 to 0.9± 0.1 dm. The mean spherical equivalent (SE) changed from+ 0.8± 1,7 Diopters to -0.12±0,5 Diopters. After the surgery on 17 eyes (%18,6 ) YAG laser capsulotomy and 15 eyes(%16,5) had laser enhancement treatments. %65,6 patients were within ±0.50 D and %95,5 were within ±1.0D.

Conclusions:

Multifocal IOL implantation after refractive laser treatments provides good and predictable visual acuity and patient satisfaction. IOl calculation is a challenging subject specially with the patients with no refractive laser history . Visual outcomes did not differ in previously hyperopic or myopic eyes. The patients must be informed about the neccesity of laser enhancement after cataract surgery.
