Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the clinical outcomes after 2 types of mix and match implantation ; extended depth of focus (EDOF) intraocular lens and +3.25D multifocal IOL implantation (group A) Versus +2.75D multifocal IOL and +4.0D multifocal IOL implantation (group B).

Setting:

Randomised clinical trial.

Methods:

20 patients were enrolled in each group. Patients mean age was 66.1 ± 8.1 in group A and 65.78 ± 5.74 in group B. After phacoemulsification, EDOF IOL or +2.75 D near add MFIOL in dominant eye, and +3.25D or +4.00 D near add MFIOL in non-dominant eye were implanted, respectively. Postoperative examination included; near visual acuity (NVA), intermediate visual acuity (IVA), distance visual acuity (DVA), reading distance, reading speed, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity, and satisfaction score.

Results:

Postoperative bilateral UCNVA, UCIVA and UCDVA at postoperative 1 months were 0.19±0.06 LogMAR, 0.09±0.04 LogMAR, and 0.01±0.12LogMAR in group A; 0.150 ± 0.159 LogMAR, 0.362 ± 0.162 LogMAR, and 0.080 ± 0.169 LogMAR in group B, respectively. Near stereoacuity at 40cm in group B was average 72 seconds (60 – 80 seconds). Overall satisfaction rate was 4.1/5 in group A and 4.2/5 in group B. Independence of near glasses score was 4.8/5 in group A and 4.5/5 in group B. and overall glare/halo score was 1.9/5 in group A and 2.3/5 in group B (1;worst, 5;best).

Conclusions:

Patients showed high satisfaction rate in both groups. There were better UCIVA, less photic symptoms and slightly higher chance of spectacle independence in group A. Nobody complained of the difference between their two eyes. Mix-and-match implantation seems one of the good options to restore full range of vision after cataract operation.
