Comparison of the samfilcon A and lotrafilcon B silicone hydrogel contact lenses on postoperative pain control after photorefractive keratectomy

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the samfilcon A and lotrafilcon B silicone hydrogel bandage contact lenses (BCLs) on postoperative pain control after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

Setting:

Randomized clinical trial study

Methods:

Forty-four eyes of 22 patients who underwent PRK were included in this contralateral eye study. In the end of the surgery, the samfilcon A (Bausch & Lomb® Ultra) was used in one eye and the lotrafilcon B (Alcon® Air Optix plus HydraGlyde) was used in the fellow eye randomly. Pain and discomfort (epiphora, photophobia, foreign body sensation, and blurred vision) were assessed on the first and third postoperative days after surgery using visual analogue scale (0 = no pain and discomfort; 10 = highest level of pain and discomfort).

Results:

On the first day, the mean postoperative score of pain, epiphora, photophobia, and foreign body sensation were 2.73±2.71, 3.95±2.62, 4.73±2.81, and 2.86±2.69 for eyes fitted with the samfilcon A lens and 5.27±3.34, 5.41±2.97, 6.18±2.82, and 6.45±2.87 for eyes fitted with the lotrafilcon B lens, respectively (for all, p < 0.05). The mean pain scores were 1.05±1.55 and 1.91±1.90 on the third day after the use of the samfilcon A and lotrafilcon B lens, respectively (p = 0.027). There was no statistically significant difference between two contact lenses in terms of blurred vision on the first and third postoperative days (p>0.05).

Conclusions:

Samfilcon A was found to be significantly useful in pain control on the first and third postoperative days. Also, the eyes fitted with the samfilcon A lens showed less foreign body sensation, epiphora, and photophobia on the first day postoperatively.
