Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the intraoperative and postoperative complications and outcomes in children with Persistent Fetal Vasculature (PFV) and cataract.

Setting:

Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, India

Methods:

Phacoaspiration with primary posterior capsulotomy and anterior vitrectomy with or without IOL implantation was done in 16 children with cataract and anterior or combined PFV. The PFV stalk was cauterized using endocautery and cut en toto.

Results:

Central, steady, maintained fixation was seen in 3 patients preoperatively and 11 patients postoperatively at 1 year. 2 eyes were left aphakic due to microcornea. Visual axis obscuration was seen in 1 aphakic patient and in 5 pseudophakic patients at 12 months. Mean retinoscopy at 12 months was 13D in aphakic group and 2.83D in pseudophakic group (p=0.01). None of our patients developed glaucoma or retinal detachment. Histopathological examination of the PFV stalk was done of 6 patients, which showed vascularisation in the form of loose mesenchymal tissue and multiple thin walled blood vessels, as well as extramedullary haematopoeisis.

Conclusions:

Anterior PFV has better outcome than combined PFV and IOL implantation has favorable outcomes. Follow up is important for postoperative complications and mainly amblyopia treatment
