Evaluation of the Barrett Universal II formula for prediction of postoperative refraction following paediatric cataract surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the accuracy of the newly published Barrett Universal II formula in calculating intraocular lens (IOL) power following congenital cataract removal.

Setting:

Retrospective chart review.

Methods:

Pediatric patients that underwent uneventful cataract removal surgery along with IOL implantation between the years 2008 to 2015 were included in the study. The accuracy of 6 different IOL formulae including the Barrett Universal II formula (BUF II), Sanders-Retzlaff-Kraff SRK theoretical (SRK/T), Holladay 1, Haigis, Olsen and Hoffer Q was evaluated through calculation of the prediction error (PE) and absolute PE (APE).

Results:

Thirty-five eyes of 30 patients were included in the study, of which 51.4% were male. The Barrett Universal II formula PE (1.19±1.60 D) was significantly higher than the PE of all other formulas (SRK/T (0.21±1.36 D), Holladay 1 (0.38±1.39 D), Hoffer Q (0.67±1.48 D), Olsen (-0.66±1.83 D) and Haigis (-0.87±1.40 D), p<0.001. The BUF II APE (1.58±1.21 D) was significantly higher than that of the SRK/T (1.07±0.84 D), Holladay 1 (1.13±0.87 D), Hoffer Q (1.31±0.94 D), and Haigis (1.31±0.99 D) at the 1-month postoperative visit (p<0.02 )

Conclusions:

In extremely short eyes, less than 20 mm, the Barrett Universal II formula had the largest mean PE and the second largest APE (after Olsen).
