Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report patient satisfaction and secondary procedures in 203 patients implanted with 397 trifocal IOLs at cataract / lens surgery over a 5-year period. There were 194 bilateral implantations and 9 unilateral implantations. The POD F Trifocal IOL was employed. Minimum follow-up was 6 months.

Setting:

Private practice, Verona, Italy

Methods:

Spherical and toric lenses were implanted following femtosecond laser cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. In the postoperative, patient satisfaction was derived by patient opinion, spectacle independence, need for several follow-up visits, and secondary procedures. Special attention was given to IOL explantation, secondary refractive procedures, and photopsias.

Results:

Mean age 68±12 years. Out of the 203 patients, 182 (89.6%) were spectacle independent with minor photopsias and were satisfied with the visual outcome of the surgery. Four patients were partially satisfied because of the persisting photic phenomena. Out of the 17 patients not satisfied (8.4%): 12 complained with distant vision and were treated by lasik, toric IOL rotation, IOL exchange (1 eye); 3 complained with photic phenomena and were treated by reverse optic capture/add-on sulcus IOL; 2 previously myopic complained with near vision despite the correcting lasik, and would not undergo surgery again with this lens.

Conclusions:

Patient satisfaction with trifocal IOLs was very high in this study, with only 1% of patients dissatisfied. The correction of refractive inaccuracies removed the dissatisfation due to poor distant vision, but not those due to poor near vision. Photic phenomena did not cause IOL exchange in this study.
