Abstract Details

Purpose:

To obtain objective measurements of the optical performances of 4 advanced optics multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) for 2 apertures at 3 wavelengths.

Setting:

Grupo de Investigación en Ciencias de la Visión (CiViUM), Universidad de Murcia, Murcia, Spain.

Methods:

An optical bench (PMTF4, LambdaX, Belgium) was used to measure through-focus modulation transfer function (MTF) and United State Air Force (USAF) resolution target through-focus imaging. The measurements were performed at 3 wavelengths (480, 546 and 650 nm), using an aberration-free cornea and an aspheric cornea with +0.28µm of spherical aberration for a 5-mm pupil. The through-focus MTF and USAF target imaging per 0.25D step, for 2 apertures (3 and 4.5mm) was recorded for 4 different IOLs: Symfony (Johnson&Johnson, USA), FineVision (Physiol, Belgium), ARTIS ACTIVE MID and PLUS (Cristalens Industrie, France). All IOLs had similar power for distance vision.

Results:

The Symfony IOL only had two peaks at the green wavelength. The FineVision IOL displayed 3 peaks. MID and PLUS IOLs had two peaks, with broad peaks in the intermediate and near range. The TF-USAF imaging at 3mm in green light, with the aspheric cornea, demonstrated unsharpened outcomes between 0.75 and 1.25D and beyond 2D for the Symfony IOL, from 0.5 to 1.25D, from 1.75 D to 2.25D and beyond 3D for the FineVision IOL, from 0.75 to 1.25D and beyond 2.5D for the MID IOL, from 0.75 to 1.75D and beyond 3D for the PLUS IOL.

Conclusions:

Beyond 60cm the Symfony IOL presented a good optical performance, but with different foci for different wavelengths. The FineVision IOL provided good optics at most distances although intermediate distance contrast was acceptable in a relative short interval. MID and PLUS IOLs presented similar optical quality although the MID IOL showed a near range shifted to far vision while for the PLUS IOL was shifted to near vision. Binocular combination of ARTIS ACTIVE complementary IOLs could extend the near focus to provide relatively good retinal images of objects placed at large, intermediate and near distances if tolerated by the human brain.
