Abstract Details

Purpose:

This is the tenth annual survey on the practice patterns of Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) members in cataract surgery.

Setting:

Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada

Methods:

In January 2018, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society (COS) office sent an email with a link to the survey on REDCap to its 260 members whose primary focus was cataract surgery. Two reminders were sent at 2 week intervals. Approval for the survey was obtained from the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region Ethics Board. All responses were collected anonymously.

Results:

Topical anaesthesia (95.5%) was most commonly used. Astigmatism correction at the time of surgery was performed by 69.7% of respondents. A Toric intraocular lens was used 82% of the time. 74% corrected 1 Diopter or more of With The Rule astigmatism while 76.7% corrected 1 Diopter or less of Against The Rule astigmatism. Intracameral antibiotics were used by 46.6% of respondents. Postoperatively, 9% of respondents used a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug eye drop only, while 22% used a steroid eye drop only and 69% used a combination of the two. Immediately Sequential Bilateral Cataract Surgery was performed by 25% of respondents.

Conclusions:

This survey gives valuable information to the members of the Canadian Ophthalmological Society as to how their peers are practising. Of note, the use of Toric intraocular lenses and intracameral antibiotics have increased markedly over the years.
