Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the validity of Flap motility sign for diagnosing the extent of anterior capsular tears: a case series of consecutive 117 patients of anterior capsular tears.

Dr Om Parkash Eye Institute

Methods:

A prospective study was conducted on 20,342 patients who underwent phacoemulsification between April 2015 and July 2018. Study included 117 consecutive patients with anterior capsular tears. The nature and motility of anterior capsular flaps were studied. Nature of the flaps was divided into everted and inverted flaps whereas the motility of flaps was categorised into fluttering and non fluttering types. The relationship of nature and motility of the anterior capsular tears with posterior capsule rupture was evaluated.

Results:

There were 98 eyes which had pre equatorial tears and 19 eyes wherein there were post equatorial tears associated with posterior capsule rupture.There was an absolute relationship between pre equatorial tears with the nature and motility of flaps. All pre equatorial flaps were everted and fluttering. All the 19 post equatorial flaps had inverted and non fluttering flaps.There was a nucleus drop in one eye.

Conclusions:

Flap motility sign helps to conclusively estimate the intraoperative extent of anterior capsular tear. The pre equatorial tears have fluttering flaps with associated everted nature. The post equatorial tears, wrap around tears, are non fluttering and inverted in nature.
