The sinusoidal trifocal intraocular lens in cataract surgery and its effect on the quality of patients’ vision

Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to present the first results of implantation the sinusoidal trifocal intraocular lens in patients with cataracts and presbyopia

Setting:

1 Department of Ophthalmology, Katowice Division, Medical University of Silesia, Poland 2 Department of Ophthalmology, Professor K. Gibinski University Clinical Center of the Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland

Methods:

The analysed group of patients consisted of 9 patients (18 eyes) with Trifocal IOL (Acriva Trinova Sinusoidal Trifocal IOL) implanted. There were 3 men and 5 woman in age 49-76 (average -67,25 ). Exclusion criteria: corneal astigmatism > 1.0D Cyl., corneal, retinal or optic nerve pathologies, previous eye surgery. Follow-up examination: 2 days - 2 week – 1 month -3 months - 6 months. There were assessed: Binocular UCDVA, UCIVA, UCNVA, Patient’s postoperative quality of life (VF-14 test), Contrast sensitivity in photopic and mesopic conditions, Visual adverse effects, Defocus curve and postoperative complications. The preferred reading distance also was determined

Results:

Implanted IOL power 17.0-23.0D. Best distance and near-corrected and uncorrected binocular vision were significantly better. Postop UCIVA J2 was reached in 5 patients. Mean refractive error before surgery was -1.75 +/- 2.45 and after surgery -0.35 +/-0.23. Contrast sensitivity improved significantly p=0.02. No IOL dislocation was observed. No adverse effects were noticed. Changes in VF-14 test was statistically significant (T-test for dependent variables p=0.002) from 62.36 to 85.14 points. Corneal endothelial cells density (before: 2532.15 after: 2380.53) and IOP - no significant differences.The preferred reading distance was between 45 and 50 cm for the patients after bilateral surgery.

Conclusions:

This solution (Acriva Trinova Sinusoidal Trifocal IOL) seems to be good option for patients with cataract and presbyopia. In the significant majority of patients, the maximum visual acuity was reached for distance, near and intermediate. In this initial patients group during this observation time refractive error was stable. This trifocal IOL gives high patient satisfaction.
