Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess the clinical outcomes of mix and match implantation of Tecnis® Symfony and Tecnis® Multifocal +3.25 add (ZLB00).

Setting:

Prospective clinical study, Department of Ophthalmology, Kangbuk Samsung Hospital, Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine, Seoul, Korea

Methods:

This study was performed in 25 patients, 50 age-related cataract eyes (Tecnis® Symfony ZXR00 for the dominant eyes and Tecnis® ZLB00 (+3.25 add) for non-dominant eyes. The following outcomes were assessed preoperatively and at 1 , 3 and 6 months postoperatively: uncorrected & corrected visual acuity in distant, Intermediate and near distance (UDVA,CDVA, UIVA, UNVA), monocular and binocular defocus curves, contrast sensitivity (csv-1000), reading speed test with “Korean, HanGul”, subjective questionnaires for satisfaction, photic phenomenon and visual Visual Functioning Questionnaire (VFQ-25). And previous results of 25 patients, bilateral Symfony implantations in same setting were compared.

Results:

Mean decimal outcomes of UDVA, UIVA and UNVA of Symfony and Bifocal Tecnis were 0.98/0.85/0.59 and 0.99/0.68/0.74 respectively and binocular outcomes of UDVA, UIVA and UNVA of 25 patients were 1.12, 0.91 and 0.80 at postoperative 6 months. The percentage of patients with better UCNA than J2 was 92% binocularly and 88% patients achieved spectacle independence in all foci. Mix-and-Match group showed better UNVA than bilateral Symfony group (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

Mix-and-Match strategy of Tecnis® Symfony and Tecnis® Bifocal +3.25 add (ZLB00) could be an effective option for improving near visual outcomes with excellent far and intermediate vison and showed significant improvement in VFQ-25.
