Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the visual outcomes between two extended depth of focus (EDOF) lenses (Group I; Mini WELL, SIFI and Group II; Symfony, J&J) with different optic design

Setting:

This prospective Cohort study was performed in patients who underwent phacoemulsification and EDOF IOL implantation at Samsung Medical Center between October 2018 and December 2018.

Methods:

Two different types of EDOF IOLs were implanted to cataract patients. Fourty eyes (Group I=20, Group II=20) of 40 cataract patients were enrolled to this study. Visual acuity (LogMAR) including corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA) were measured before the surgery and at three months after the surgery. Manifest refraction and defocus curves were also evaluated. OPD-Scan III aberrometer was used to measure ocular aberrations at 4.7 mm of pupil size. Dysphotopsia, spectacle independence, and overall satisfaction were evaluated by questionnaires.

Results:

CDVA and UDVA was better in Group II (-0.10±0.07 and -0.10±0.07) than Group I (0.02±0.06 and 0.07±0.11, P<0.001). The range of defocus diopter corresponding to the visual acuity of 0.1 or greater was -3.25D and -2.5D in Group I and II, respectively. Ocular RMS high order aberration and spherical aberration were smaller in Group I (0.276±0.097 and -0.063±0.045) than Group II (0.370±0.134; P=0.034 and -0.063±0.045; P=0.019). Glare, halo, and starburst pattern were lower in Group I than Group II (P<0.05).

Conclusions:

Mini WELL and Symfony have different amount of add power due to their unique optic design. When selecting EDOF IOL, each optical characteristic of the EDOF IOL should be considered.
