Comparative study of the defocus tolerance between diffractive trifocal and extended-depth-of-focus intraocular lenses

Abstract Details

Purpose:

Assess the clinical usefulness of the objective and subjective measurement of the defocus tolerance of four models of intraocular lenses (IOL) as well as knowing which lens has the greatest defocus tolerance.

Setting:

Hospital Universitario QuironSalud, Pozuelo de Alarcón, Madrid, Spain.

Methods:

Defocus tolerance of the following intraocular lens was evaluated: AT LISATRI 839MP (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Alemania), Finevision Pod F (Physiol, Liége, Bélgica), Symfony (Johnson&Johnson, Nueva Jersey, Estados Unidos) y Miniwell (SIFI, EyeCare Together, Italia). All eyes were previously examined to rule out any degree of capsular opacity or associated maculopathy that prevented inclusion in the study. Two methods were used, one objective using the aberometer iTrace (Tracey Technologies Racey Houston, Estados Unidos) through a visual quality descriptor called VSOTF1 (Visual Strehl Optical Transfer Function) and another subjective one based on refractive changes controlling the pupil size.

Results:

The total sample was 200 eyes. Four study groups were made, one for each type of lens, each formed by 50 eyes. The DOF (depth of focus) value at 90%, measured objectively, was 0.355 ± 0.10 diopters (D) for ATLISA TRI 839MP, 0.284 ± 0.06 D for Finevision, 0.514 ± 0.10 D for Symfony and 0.354 ± 0.10 D for Miniwell. The value of DOF at 90%, measured subjectively, was 0.448 ± 0.06 D for AT LISA TRI 839MP, 0.490 ± 0.09 D for Finevision, 0.754 ± 0.06 D for Symfony and 0.575 ± 0.02 D for Miniwell.

Conclusions:

Objective and subjective measures show similar, but not equivalents results. The subjectivity of the patients demonstrates better defocus tolerance than the objective measure. In both types of measurements, the lens with the greatest defocus tolerance was Symfony. This will allow patients to have a better acceptance before postoperative refraction residual.
