Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate clinical outcomes with an extended depth of focus IOL (LARA) compared to an extended-range-of-vision IOL (Symfony) and a monofocal IOL (ASPHINA).

Setting:

Nine European clinics in Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Spain and Italy

Methods:

Multicentric, prospective, randomised clinical study including 428 eyes of 214 patients undergoing cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of AT LARA 829MP (Carl Zeiss Meditec), TECNIS Symfony (Johnson & Johnson) or CT ASPHINA 409MP (Carl Zeiss Meditec). Postoperative examinations included assessing monocular and binocular visual acuity, subjective refraction, depth of focus, patient satisfaction and subjective quality of vision at 1 month. Defocus and visual acuity testing were performed using the electronic Freiburg Visual Acuity and Contrast Test (FrACT) and a questionnaire was used to evaluate patient satisfaction and quality of Vision.

Results:

Two-hundred-thirty-four patients were assessed for study eligibility and 200 patients completed the outcome assessment at 1 month postoperatively. Mean corrected distance visual acuity did not differ statistically significantly between groups (p>0.05). Monocular defocus curves showed the extended-depth-of-focus and extended-range-of-vision IOL had better intermediate and near performance than the monofocal IOL. The monocular depth of focus at a 0.3 logMAR threshold was statistically significantly wider with LARA compared to Symfony (p=0.0298) and ASPHINA (p=0.0002) IOL. The questionnaire results for quality of vision showed better results for the monofocal IOL especially for halo perception compared to the extended-depth-of-focus and extended-range-of-vision IOL.

Conclusions:

The extended-depth-of-focus IOLs provided wider depth of focus compared to the extended-range-of-vision IOLs and monofocal IOLs and comparable distance visual acuity results.
