Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the surgical outcomes of small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) in eyes with myopic astigmatism.

Setting:

Batıgöz Eye Hospital, Izmir, Turkey.

Methods:

This study has included 62 eyes that underwent SMILE procedure, using Visumax ® femtosecond laser (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Germany) for the correction of myopic astigmatism. Inclusion criteria was the spherical equivalent (SE) within the range of -1 to -8.50 D with a minimum astigmatism of -0.75D. Preoperative and postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) , corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), mean spherical equivalent refraction and the residual refractive error were recorded.

Results:

The mean preoperative SE refraction was -4.70±2.01 D (range -1 to -8.50 D) and the mean astigmatism was -1.38± 0.65D (range -0.75 To -3.50 D). The mean postoperative SE was-0.33 ±0.39 D and the mean postoperative astigmatism was -0.53±0.37 D. The residual astigmatism was 0.5 D or less in 65% of cases.

Conclusions:

Small-incison lenticule extraction seems to offer both surgeons and patients a safe and effective correction of myopic astigmatism up to -3.50 D
