Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare the spherical aberration (SA) between patients impanted with three different intraocular lenses (IOL) of a same platform.

Setting:

Miguel Servet University Hospital, Zaragoza, Spain.

Methods:

All the IOLs used in the study belong to the Tecnis platform (Abbott Medical Optics). 86 eyes (43 patients) were implanted with the monofocal ZCB00 IOL, 88 eyes (44 patients) with the multifocal ZMB00 IOL and 62 eyes (31 patients) with the extended range of vision Symfony IOL. Patients with any ocular pathology were excluded from this study. They were examined the KR-1W (Topcon) wavefront analyser. The pupil size evaluated was 6 mm.

Results:

Mean age was 63.47±6.54 years old. We found no differences in age, axial length or power of the IOL implanted. Nor we found any differences regarding total, corneal and internal SA outcomes. However, we found differences when classifying patients in three groups according to their total SA, whose limits were: 0 and 0.18μm. There were not when classifying according to their corneal SA, whose limits were: 0.185 and 0.363μm. We found a tendency towards more positive in the ZMB00 group.

Conclusions:

In general, internal SA is higher than expected. Despite having a negative internal SA, the final value is always higher than -0.27μm. The same optical properties which give different focal points may be the underlying cause of this event. In addition, it should be taken into account a possible influence of the infrared light in these measurements, as it overestimates near-vision focus in multifocal IOLs. However, premium IOLs do not imply major differences in internal SA.
