Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe a new device that is designed to objectively assess lifestyle and visual requirements ahead of cataract surgery, refractive lens exchange or laser vision correction in order to optimize the intended outcome.

Setting:

Five center study conducted in Ireland, Germany and Switzerland.

Methods:

The Visual Behavior Monitor (VBM) (Vivior AG, Zurich, Switzerland) is a wearable device that continuously monitors visual behavior of the wearer prior to refractive or cataract surgery. The device contains sensors that measure viewing distance and direction, as well as an ambient light sensor, magnetometer and UV light sensor. It is fixed onto the spectacle frames with a magnetic clip and is worn for a minimum of 36 hours. The data is processed and then reviewed by the surgeon in conjunction with standard pre-surgical diagnostic test results to determine the optimal refractive correction.

Results:

The VBM is capable of measuring distance at which an activity is performed, e.g. reading or computer use, as well as lighting conditions and head movement along three axes. In a 5 center prospective feasibility study, the VBM worked in all eyes (N=115), regardless of the grade of cataract that was present, with 65% of eyes having ≥3 on the Lens Opacities Classification System scale.

Conclusions:

The combination of this data can provide clinicians with a complete picture of a participant’s visual requirements and lifestyle in order to select the best visual correction before cataract surgery. The VBM has the potential to improve outcomes and patient satisfaction in cataract and refractive surgery patients.
