Abstract Details
Purpose:
To design a novel IOL for cataract surgery which effectively addresses presbyopia by changing the curvature of a fluid-filled lens to increase the dioptric power.
Setting:
The lens has been in development for many years with the first human implantations done approximately 5 years ago in the setting of a clinical trial. The lens is called the Juvene and it is made by LensGen which is based in California, USA.
Methods:
We designed a dual optic lens which consists of two parts: a large, stationary base lens which completely fills the capsular bag and an anteriorly-placed, fluid-filled power lens which changes curvature to increase the power to give a wide range of vision without spectacles. The optics are clear and without diffractive rings or other aberration-inducing issues.
Results:
Initial clinical trials of the newest iteration of the Juvene lens have shown three or more diopters of focal range, thereby giving an effective treatment for presbyopia while maintaining excellent distance visual acuity.
Conclusions:
The Juvene IOL from LensGen has promising initial results where study patients achieved three or more diopters of visual range.
