Abstract Details

Purpose:

To quantitatively evaluate the degree of posterior capsule opacification(PCO) by optical quality analysis system(OQAS) in the patients of PCO, to evaluates whether OQAS can serve as a valuable indicator for timely Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy.

Setting:

the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University,Shenyang,China

Methods:

Ninety-six patients (105 eyes),who were diagnosed as PCO,were included in this study. The severity of PCO was analyzed by EPCO 2000 software. The objective visual function was assessed by the modulation transfer function (MTF) cutoff frequency, Strehl ratio, objective scattering index (OSI), measured by OQAS,the subjective visual quality was evaluated by Chinese version of VF-14 index. At 1 month after the Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy, the evaluation of the visual function by OQAS and VF-14 index were repeated.

Results:

All subjects were divided into 2 groups, group A of logMAR CDVA(corrected distant visual acuity) ≤0.1 and the group B of logMAR CDVA >0.1.In group A, the strongest correlation was between precapsulotomy OSI and VF-14 score(r=-0.744,P=0.000). In group B, precapsulotomy VF-14 score and EPCO score were significantly correlated(r = -0.668, P = 0.000), besides the strongest correlation between precapsulotomy OSI and VF-14 score (r=-0.850, P = 0.000). At 1 month after the capsulotomy, all the parameters for objective and subjective visual function evaluation were significantly improved, except the logMAR CDVA in the group A.

Conclusions:

For patients with slight PCO and better visual acuity, OSI is more sensitive than CDVA. OSI has stronger correlation with EPCO score and VF-14, and is a complete objective examination. Thus, the OSI based on the double-pass system maybe a good indicator for objective PCO evaluation and providing strong evidence for the indication of laser capsulotomy.
