Abstract Details

Purpose:

To describe cases of phimosis formation in multifocal IOLs (MIOLs) following femtosecond laser assisted cataract surgery (FLACS), which was smoothly treated by YAG capsulotomy.

Setting:

Nishi Eye Hospital, Osaka, Japan

Methods:

We retrospectively investigated the incidence of phimosis formation following FLACS with implantation of MIOLs at our institute.

Results:

280 eyes underwent FLACS with implantation of MIOLs. Among all, there were 4 eyes of 2 patients, which had phimosis during the early postoperative period and the patients suffered from blurred vision. The cataract grades were III and IV. After YAG capsulotomy treatment in these cases, the symptom disappeared immediately. 1 year after the treatment, no recurrence of phimosis was observed and there was no complication.

Conclusions:

Phimosis formation is rare but could occur occasionally after FLACS, probably in hard cataract cases, which can be treated smoothly by YAG capsulotomy. With increasing clinical cases of implantation of MIOLs combined with FLACS, further reports are beneficial to investigate the risk factors, related conditions and probably preventive methods of phimosis formation after FLACS.
