Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the effects of a hydroxypropyl guar (HPG) and hyaluronic acid (HA) ophthalmic solution on post-cataract surgery ocular discomfort.

Setting:

Multicenter study, Italy

Methods:

350 patients not affected by dry-eye syndrome, scheduled for unilateral cataract surgery were enrolled. All patients followed the same antibiotic and anti-inflammatory postoperative topical regimen. They were randomly divided in three groups: 1) control group: no additional artificial tears; 2) study group A: HPG/HA solution 3 times/day in the preoperative week and for two postoperative months; 3) study group B: HPG/HA only for two postoperative months. At the preoperative visit and at 1,4 and 8 postoperative weeks SPEED (Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness) questionnaire score, tear Break-up Time (BUT) and fluorescein staining score (Oxford scale) were evaluated.

Results:

At week 4 and week 8 postoperative visits, SPEED score was significantly lower in the two study groups than in the control group (p<0.05), and BUT was significantly higher in study group A and study group B in comparison with controls (p<0.05). At these visits BUT was higher in the study group A than in the study group B, even if without statistical significance.

Conclusions:

Hydroxypropyl guar and hyaluronic acid ophthalmic solution was effective in reduction of post cataract surgery ocular discomfort, particularly if administered also in the preoperative period.
