Abstract Details
Purpose:
To know the clinical profile and management of traumatic cataract in a developing country.
Setting:
Type of study: - Prospective interventional case series. Study was done in a tertiary care hospital of Odisha, India.
Methods:
Study of duration 2 years from December 2013 to November 2015 included 87 eyes of 87 patients with traumatic cataract. The study involved: 1) Preoperative detailed ophthalmic evaluation 2) Various modalities of treatment like Phacoemulsification, small incision cataract surgery (SICS), capsular tension ring (CTR), scleral fixated intraocular lens (SFIOL), Pars Plana Lensectomy (PPL), 3) Postoperative evaluation at the end of 1, 4 , 6 week and 3 month.
Results:
Incidence was 0.3%. Male: Female ratio is 3.4:1. 69% of cases were ≤40 years old. Penetrating injury was 46%. Injury by stick (34.5%) and stone (31%). 41.4% of patients presented within 48 hours. 13 cases (14.9%) with subluxated lens and 15 cases (17.2%) with dislocation. SICS with posterior chamber intraocular lens (PCIOL) was done in 20 patients (23%). Bandage contact lens (BCL) was given in 2 patients. Post-operative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at the end of 3 months shows 27.7% of total patients had a good vision (20/40 — 20/30), while 55.2% had a moderate vision (20/200 — 20/60).
Conclusions:
Traumatic cataract is a common cause of ocular morbidity, especially in younger individuals with higher incidence in males. Several different surgical techniques can be employed to restore vision.
