Purpose:
To evaluate the effect of interface flushing on final visual acuity in small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE).
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Selcuk University, Konya, Turkey
Methods:
The study population included the patients underwent uneventful SMILE surgery for correction of myopia.The exclusion criterion was having anizometropia over 1D. At the end of the procedure, interface flushing was performed in randomly selected one eye of the patient. Interface healing and corneal thickness was followed by slitlamp biomicroscopy and measured with anterior segment optical coherence tomography in postoperative first day, first week and first month. Uncorrected visual acuity was also noted at the same time intervals. The difference between two eyes were compared using paired t test (SPSS20.0 Inc).p values lower than 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant.
Results:
138 eyes of 69 patients were included in the study. No statistical difference was observed regarding visual acuity between the eyes flushed vs. not flushed. 2 eyes with interface flushing had small foreign bodies postoperatively, but these not caused any visual deterioration.
Conclusions:
The interface flushing after removal of lenticule in SMILE, has no advantage, moreover it might cause entrance of foreign bodies or epithelium into the interface.
