Abstract Details

Purpose:

Purpose: To observe the integrity of posterior capsule on a modified posterior segment optical coherence tomography in cases of posterior polar cataracts.

Setting:

Setting: Prospective observational study at a tertiary eye hospital, Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, AIIMS. New Delhi. India.

Methods:

Methods: We modified the posterior segment OCT by placing an aspheric 20 dioptre lens along its aperture. This modified tool is now able to scan the anterior segment. We assessed 26 eyes with clinically confirmed posterior polar cataracts on this tool to look for their morphology and the posterior capsular integrity. All the observations were performed by a single observer, and the integrity of posterior capsule was deciphered preoperatively by the knowledge gathered with consistent observations.

Results:

The average age of 17 patients (26 eyes) was 53 years. The morphology appeared mainly as a dense opacity in front of the posterior capsule with variable hypoechoic spaces within it in all 26 eyes. An intact posterior capsule is indicated by a prominent convex layer, whereas the dearth of posterior capsule is indicated by a variable sized opening along the posterior capsule with/without posterior herniation of the lens matter. Thus, resembling the conical morphology, this was observed in a total of four eyes (15.38%) and in whom an intra operative capsular deficiency was confirmed by the respective surgeons.

Conclusions:

Conclusions: In cases of posterior polar cataracts, on a modified posterior segment OCT, a conical shaped configuration of posterior capsule can be considered as a sign of its deficiency.
