Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the corneal curvature and astigmatism measurements provided by three different systems and to assess the interchangeability between them in healthy eyes.
Setting:
Department of Optics, Pharmacology and Anatomy, University of Alicante, Spain
Department of Ophthalmology. Vithas Medimar International Hospital, Alicante, Spain
Methods:
A total of 28 healthy eyes of 28 patients (age, 15-53 years) were enrolled. A complete eye examination was performed in all cases including analysis of anterior corneal curvature and astigmatism with three devices: the Cassini system (i-Optics), the Scheimpflug-based system Pentacam (Oculus Optikgeräte), and the IOL Master 500 (Zeiss). Differences between devices were assessed by means of Wilcoxon Test. The Bland & Altman analysis was used to evaluate the agreement between devices.
Results:
Statistically significant differences were found in Mean k, Steep k, and Flat k between the three devices (p < 0.001). No significant differences between devices were found in Astigmatism (magnitude) and J0 power vector (p=0.054 and p=0.156, respectively). In contrast, statistically significant differences between devices were found for J45 (p=0.022). Bland-Altman plots showed clinically relevant differences between devices for all studied parameters.
Conclusions:
The three devices evaluated did not provide interchangeable measurements of anterior corneal curvature. These results should be considered when considering data for calculating intraocular lens power.
