Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate outcome of myopic photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) using Schwind Amaris (SA) refractive laser with SmartSurfACE (SS) beam profile at 12 month post-operatively.
Setting:
Laser Eye Centre
Methods:
Retrospective case series. 1630 eyes underwent myopic transepithelial PRK (TE-PRK) with Schwind Amaris (SA) and SmartSurfACE (SS). Outcomes were analyzed in 3 groups: moderate myopia (0.00D to -6.00D), high myopia (-6.12D to -10.00D), and extreme myopia (>-10.00D). Pre and post-operative assessment of symptoms, uncorrected visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), manifest refraction (MR), predictability, and safety were analyzed at 12 month
Results:
Evaluation of 1137 eyes moderate myopia, 371 eyes high myopia, and 122 eyes extreme myopia. Mean spherical equivalent (MSE) improved -3.56±1.62D to -0.16±0.66D for moderate myopia, -7.94±1.21D to -0.22±0.54D high myopia, and 11.80±1.54D to -0.16±0.71D extreme myopia. UDVA≥20/25 achieved by 96%(1094/1137), 91%(343/371) and 74%(92/122) respectively; ≥20/40 achieved by 85%(106/122) in extreme myopia. CDVA≥20/20 achieved by 98%(1111), 95%(357) and 77%(96) respectively; ≥20/25 achieved by 93%(116) in extreme myopia. 98%(1116), 97%(359), and 93%(114) had no change or improved CDVA respectively. 26%(32) had CDVA improved while 2%(2) lost ≥2 lines in extreme myopia group.
Conclusions:
Trans-epithelial photorefractive keratectomy with Schwind Amaris SmartSurfACE excimer laser achieved good safety and efficacy across a wide range of myopia. Post-operative MSE was corrected to the range of plano and -0.25D with standard deviation within 0.75D in all 3 groups. More than 90% in moderate and high myopia groups achieved ≥20/25 UDVA while 85% in extreme myopia group achieved ≥20/40. 93% or more in each group had no change or improved CDVA while only 2 eyes of 1630 lost ≥2. TE PRK with an upgraded laser beam showed satisfactory results in all ranges of myopia with good efficacy and safety.
