Customised vs conventional Femto-LASIK procedures in low-to-moderate myopia: comparative analysis of the visual outcomes

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate and compare visual and refractive outcomes after primary LASIK surgery for the correction of myopia using 3 different treatment protocols

Setting:

The S. Fyodorov Eye Microsurgery State Institution, Russia

Methods:

We observed 748 eyes with low and moderate myopia, out of which 258 eyes were operated by the Wavefront-guided algorithm (WFG), 243 eyes – Topo-guided algorithm (TG), 247 eyes – standard ablation (control). All flaps were formed with the femtosecond laser Femto LDV Z6 (Switzerland) and all eyes were treated by the MicroscanVisum excimer laser (Russia). The customized ablations were calculated with PlatoScan and KeraScan-M softwares. All patients underwent complete refractive examination before surgery, and also patients were examined on the 1st day and 1 month after FemtoLASIK

Results:

One month postoperatively, in the WFG group the UDVA 20/20 and 20/16 was achieved in 94,2% and 69%, in the TG group - in 93% and 47%, in the control group – in 88,3% and 34,8% (p>0,05). The predictability of targeted refraction within ±0,5 D was in 95,7%, 94,2% and 89,5% in the WFG, TG and control groups, respectively (p>0,05). The safety index in the WFG group was 1.00 (1,00; 1,20) (Me (Q25; Q75)), in the TG group – 1.00 (1,00; 1,20) (Me (Q25; Q75)), in the control group - 1,00 (1,00; 1,00) (Me (Q25; Q75)) (p>0,05)

Conclusions:

The customized FemtoLASIK procedures using the aberrometer and keratotopography data are more effective, safe and predictable methods for low to moderate myopia correction in comparison with the conventional algorithm
