Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the gender differences in corneal biomechanical properties in keratoconus patients using Corneal Visualization Scheimpflug Technology (Corvis ST, Oculus).
Setting:
Vision Health Research Center, Semnan, Iran
Methods:
This study included 197 eyes with keratoconus (86 females and 111 males). Thirty seven dynamic corneal response parameters were measured using Corvis ST device.
Results:
The mean age of patients was 34.39 ± 7.92 years old. After age- adjusted analysis between male and female groups, the following parameters were significantly higher in male group: pick distance (B=-0.14, P=0.001), highest concavity deformation amplitude (B=-0.04, P=0.025), highest concavity deflection amplitude (B=-0.05, P=0.007) and highest concavity deflection area (B=-0.27, P=0.003). Non-corrected IOP (B=0.92, P=0.021), applanation 1 time (B=0.10, P=0.016), highest concavity time (B=0.16, P=0.019) and biomechanical IOP (B=0.78, P=0.029) were significantly higher in female group.
Conclusions:
Gender differences exist in corneal biomechanical metrics in keratoconus patients and should consider in management of these patients.
