Purpose:
To evaluate the effect of angle kappa on patients satisfaction following implantation of a new trifocal intraocular lens (IOL).
Setting:
Bayindir Hospital, Department of Ophthalmology, Ankara, Turkey
Methods:
This study included 90 eyes of 45 patients who underwent cataract surgery and implantation of PanOptix trifocal IOL between March 2017-December 2018.Biometry was performed with IOL Master 700 (Carl Zeiss, Germany).The angle kappa was analyzed with topography (Sirius,Italy) and absolute Px and Py values from biometry .The Chord Mu is calculated from the hypotenuse of Px and Py values.The patients were classified according to the Chord Mu. Group 1 included the patients with Chord Mu is equal or <0.3, Group 2 between 0.3 to 0.5 and Group 3 ≥0.5. Visual function 14 (VF-14) test results were analyzed in each group.
Results:
There were 25 women and 20 men with a mean age of 64.9±10.8 (21-80) years. The mean VF-14 test results was 97.5±2.7 (93.75-100) for group1,96.6±2 (93.75-100) for group2 and 97.9±3 (93.75-100) for group3. No significant difference was found in VF-14 test results among the groups (p=0.736).There was no significant difference between group1 and group3 (p=0.771),group 2 and group3(p=0.562). Also, no statistically significant difference was found between group 1 and 2 (p=0.518). The angle kappa from topography were found as 0.21±0.12 mm for Group 1, 0.23±0.1 mm for Group 2, 0.26±0.12 for Group 3.
Conclusions:
Although angle kappa is thought to play an important role for trifocal IOL outcomes and patients satisfaction, it did not seem to have a significant effect in the quality of life of the patients.
