Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report 52 cases of color change in multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOL) following cataract surgery with phacoemulsification in two different cities.

Setting:

Memorial Oftalmo Hospital de Olhos - Recife Eye Center, Recife, Brazil and Tranjan Eye Hospital, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Methods:

A retrospective case review of patients with color change in IOL is reported. Outcome measures were uncorrected distance and near visual acuities (UCDVA and UCNVA).

Results:

Group A: 1709 aspheric apodized diffractive MIOLs were implanted in 889 patients between March, 2010 to March, 2018 by the same surgeon in Recife. From these, 576 patients had been followed annually after surgery and were examined between March, 2018 to March, 2019 with a minimum one-year follow-up. Both UCDVA and UCNVA remained unchanged. Forty-three eyes presented color changing not associated to sign or symptom. Twenty-eight IOLs became red, three orange, eleven blue and one green. Most of them, between three and five years after implantation. Group B: Nine MIOLs in five patients performed in Sao Paulo also became red.

Conclusions:

Color changing was observed in 52 eyes underwent cataract surgery and implantation of apodized diffractive multifocal IOL after long-term follow-up, with no decreased visual acuity nor other complaint. Longer time trials must be done to study this phenomenon to identify the possible causes and relation to visual acuity.
