Abstract Details

Purpose:

We designed a mobile model eye and implanted a monofocal IOL and two diffractive multifocal IOLs. Subsequently, we photographed the real world to examine how the world actually looks like to patients with multifocal IOLs.

Setting:

Yeouido St. Mary’s hospital, Seoul

Methods:

The model eye was comprised of an artificial cornea, an IOL, an IOL mount, and a camera. We held the laptop in one hand and the model eye in the other and went outside to take a picture of the scenery. At night, we stood on a road to see how the traffic lights, headlights, and tail lights of cars looked. For an indoor analysis, we approached the ETDRS chart to the model eye from a distance of 95 cm to check the multifocal function. We repeated it with a smart phone, instead of ETDRS chart for an outdoor analysis.

Results:

Far objects appeared either similarly clear or slightly hazier than those with the monofocal IOL. In the night vision, there was a mild or severe halo around light sources compared to those with the monofocal IOL, At the near distance, the letters looked clearer than those with the monofocal IOL, but the halo around the letters was faint or considerable

Conclusions:

We believe that this mobile model eye can be used to evaluate how the real world looks like, to a patient with a multifocal IOL, to explain multifocal function of the IOLs, and possible complications in the patients, before performing a surgery.
