Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess dynamic variations in pupil induced by changes in brightness in eyes implanted with phakic collamer intraocular lens (pIOL) with central port for correction of myopia.

Setting:

Clinica Baviera. Madrid. Spain

Methods:

In the present study, a modified commercially available swept-source anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) clinical device was used for imaging and performing dynamic pupillometry under changing light conditions. Freezing one frame when the pupil reached its maximum and minimum size, and subsequently we processed the images acquired. The measurements taken from the images were pupil size in the iris plane preoperatively and one month after surgeries, and postoperative vault.

Results:

The study sample comprised 14 eyes (9 patients). Mean pupil size under photopic conditions was 3.04 ± 0.51 mm preoperatively, and 3.11 ± 0.47 mm after ICL implantations. Mean pupil size under scotopic light conditions was 5.19 ± 0.81 mm before surgeries, and 5.25 ± 0.70 mm postoperatively. The mean vault value under maximum miosis was 397 ± 189 microns, and 511 ± 186 microns in maximum mydriasis. No significant differences in pupil size were found when pupil size was assessed pre and postoperative. There were statistically significant differences between vault measured in miosis and in mydriasis (p< 0.001).

Conclusions:

Pupil diameter do not change after ICL implantation under both photopic and scotopic conditions. The dynamic pupillometry allows to know the pupillary size in physiological induced mydriasis in patients who will be undergoing PIOL, determining whether be exceeded the optical zone of the lens in scotopic light conditions.
