Abstract Details

Purpose:

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the distribution of biometric parameters and characterize their correlations in a large sample of patients before phacoemulsification.

Setting:

Section of Ophthalmology, Department of Basic Medical Science, Neuroscience and Sense Organs, University of Bari, Bari, Italy.

Methods:

Data from consecutive cataract candidates scheduled for phacoemulsification and foldable intraocular lens (IOL) implantation at a single university hospital were retrospectively analyzed. A total of 306 patient were selected. Inclusion criteria were cataract and age 40 years or older. Exclusion criteria included present or past corneal disease, previous eye surgery and history of ocular inflammation or trauma. Axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), keratometric power (K) and corneal astigmatism (CA) were determined using partial coherence interferometry.

Results:

The study evaluated 600 phakic eyes of 306 patients, with a mean age of 72.83 years (range from 43 to 90 years, SD 8.12 years). The mean values of biometric characteristics were: AL 23.54 ± 1.53 mm, ACD 3.11 ± 0.47 mm, K 44.01 ± 1.47 diopters (D) and CA 1 ± 0.72 D. AL correlated positively with ACD (Student’s t-test, 0.614), but negatively with K (− 0.421). When stratified by age groups, ALs were significantly different in all groups except in 70-80 years and >80 years groups.

Conclusions:

This study provides data on ocular biometric parameters and their relationships in a large, representative population of cataract patients at least 40 years old from South Italy. The present work helps expand the reference database on ocular biometric characteristics of European cataract populations.
