Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine the safety and efficacy of high cylindrical Precizon toric intra-ocular lenses for the correction of high post keratoplasty astigmatism in patients undergoing cataract surgery.
Setting:
Clinica Barraquer in Bogota, Colombia is a private ophthalmic hospital that specializes in various types of eye surgery. It is also a referral hospital serving most of South and Central America.
Methods:
In this study we examined 12 eyes of 12 patients with high post keratoplasty astigmatism (greater than 5 diopters of corneal astigmatism) measured by topography and tomography that were scheduled for cataract surgery. After phacoemulsification, a Precizon toric IOL was implanted in the bag and axis was aligned. Observation of un-corrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA), best corrected distance visual acuity (BCDVA), endothelial cell count, keratometry, and IOL alignment using wavefront analysis was done 3 months after surgery.
Results:
After 3 months UDVA was on average 0.16 + 0.20 logMAR in the study group. All patients achieved a significantly better UCDVA and BSCDVA than the preo-operative BSCDVA. The mean pre-operative topographic astigmatism was 8.62 Diopters (D) and the mean pre-operative refractive astigmatism was 8.63 D. The mean refractive post-operative astigmatism was 1.00 D. All changes in visual and refractive data were significant (p< 0.05). Endothelial cell count showed no variability between pre and post op values.
Conclusions:
Implantation of Precizon high cylinder toric IOL’s were safe and effective way to correct pre-existing high post-keratoplasty astigmatism in cataract surgery patients.
