Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the clinical outcomes and quality of vision in patients undergoing ReLEx SMILE for myopia correction using small versus medium contact glass in eyes with large white to white( WTW) diameter in contralateral eyes of patients undergoing bilateral SMILE procedure for myopia correction.
Setting:
Nethradhama Super Speciality Eye Hospital, Bangalore
Methods:
40 eyes of 20 patients undergoing bilateral ReLEx SMILE procedure for myopia/myopic astigmatism having WTW diameter( >12 mm) in both eyes were recruited and randomized to receive treatment with a small sized contact glass in one eye and a medium sized contact glass in the contralateral eye. On post-op day 1 and 2 weeks, UDVA, CDVA, Objective Scatter Index(OSI), and MTF cut off was assessed and compared between the two groups.
Results:
Mean age of the participants was 26.4 years. On post op day 1, the UDVA in the small cone was -0.12 logMAR vs -0.09 logMAR in the medium group( p =0.32). However, the mean OSI score and MTF cut off was significantly better in the small cone compared to the medium cone group, OSI value being 0.8 vs 1.4 ( p=0.03 )& MTF cut off values being 22.14 vs 25.30 (p=0.05) respectively. At 2 weeks, the UDVA was comparable in both groups, however the OSI & MTF cut off still remained significantly better.
Conclusions:
Contrary to the recommendation, use of small size contact glass may provide better immediate post-operative visual results, due to less OBL formation and smoother tissue dissection compared to medium sized cones, when used in large corneas.
