Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate and compare the predictability of intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation after SMILE for myopia and myopic astigmatism using different calculation methods.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Philipps University of Marburg, Germany
Methods:
Two hundred and four eyes of 105 patients, who underwent SMILE, were included. Preoperative evaluation included optical biometry using IOL-Master 500 (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany) and corneal tomography using Pentacam HR (Oculus, Optikgeräte GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany). The measurements were repeated at 3 months postoperatively. The IOL power calculation was performed using ray tracing software (Okulix, Version 9.06), third- (Holladay-1, the SRK/T, Hoffer Q and Preussner-1) and fourth-generation formulas (Haigis, Haigis-L and Preussner-2). The difference between the preoperative and postoperative IOL power (IOL-Dif) was compared to the change of spherical equivalent based on manifest refraction (SEQ-Dif).
Results:
The difference between SEQ-Dif and IOL-Dif, as evaluated with ray tracing was -0.018±0.54 D (ranging -1.42 to 1.92), with Haigis-L 0.244±0.83 D (ranging -1.44 to 3.05), with Preußner-2 0.738±0.76 D (ranging -0.96 to 3.23), with Haigis 1.201±0.88 D (ranging -0.64 to 3.92), with Preußner-1 1.272±0.90 D (ranging -0.61 to 3.99), with HofferQ 1.332±0.86 D (ranging -0.45 to 4.09), with Holladay-1 1.665±0.91 D (ranging -0.31 to 4.20) and with SRK/T 1.89±0.94 D (ranging -0.25 to 4.44).
Conclusions:
Following SMILE for correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism, ray tracing was the most accurate approach for IOL power calculation, followed by Haigis-L and Preußner-2 formulas.
